PROMETHEUS. DEMO: The Experiment Promises to Become Art
The exhibition at Research Institute × Alpbau brings together archival material, videos and installations documenting Prometheus Student Engineering Bureau, founded in the Radio Engineering Department of the Kazan Aviation Institute in the early 1960s. Under physicist and aesthetics scholar Bulat Galeev, it grew into a research institute for experimental aesthetics. The collective worked with light music across art, architecture, design and applied research. Its early video experiments made Prometheus one of the pioneers of video art in the Soviet Union.
Documentary films, television recordings and manuals for building light-music instruments trace the collective’s history. Well-known installations and videos appear alongside less familiar experiments in architecture and interior design. Each work represents a distinct field of the team’s research.
The exhibition is supported by the Triumph Gallery.
The organisers thank the Prometheus collective; Viktor Mikhailovich Gureev, Vice-Rector for Development at KNRTU-KAI; and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, especially director Marina Loshak and Olga Shishko, head of Film and Media Art.
The Department of Research Arts, Prometheus Student Engineering Bureau and Research Institute × Alpbau present “PROMETHEUS. DEMO: The Experiment Promises to Become Art”, the first project in the ARCHIVE.RESEARCH series.
