Moscow—Kazan—Moscow

A joint project by the Department of Research Arts and the Smena Centre for Contemporary Culture, this exhibition grew out of more than twenty artists’ research into Kazan. Inde introduces the project and its participants.

More than twenty artists working with the Kazan context come together in one exhibition. Their personal, anthropological and artistic perspectives offer an unexpected portrait of the contemporary city. Participants span generations and include people who have lived in Kazan all their lives as well as those who spent only a short time there.

The project began with residencies organised by Smena and the Department of Research Arts. In 2016, students from the Rodchenko School researched the city and presented their work at Smena and later in Baki Urmanche Square. Further residencies followed in 2017 with Pavel Otdelnov, Nikolai Onishchenko and Alexey Vasiliev. “Moscow—Kazan—Moscow” presents the final versions of works developed during these programmes.

Painting, installation and photography offer different ways of understanding contemporary Kazan.
