The exhibition asks how architects, alongside geographers, astronomers, mathematicians and artists, helped discover and represent the Earth and space. It also considers how the globe has continued to inspire architecture, from Adam Olearius to Buckminster Fuller and Rem Koolhaas.
“Globes: Exploring Architecture and Science” presents architecture where knowledge and craft meet art and science. Ninety principal exhibits show how architects designed observatories and planetariums, worked with scientists to solve the problem of building large spherical structures and created monuments to knowledge. The story includes visionary architects, utopians, designers for political power and organisers of world exhibitions.
The projects also trace broader histories: rivalries between nations, the globe as a symbol of power, changing political images of the Earth and the visual culture of space exploration.
