Art in Europe, 1945–1968

10 October 2016 — 29 January 2017
ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Lorenzstraße 19, 76135, Karlsruhe

During “Art in Europe 1945–1968: The Continent That the EU Does Not Know”, two evenings will feature works by Alexander Scriabin, Dmitry Morozov (::vtol::) and Peter Kirn performed on the “Crystal” light-music instrument. Bulat Galeev developed the instrument in the 1960s; Dmitry Morozov and Sila Sveta reconstructed it in 2016 under the curatorial direction of Natalia Fuchs.

Founded by Bulat Galeev in 1962, the Prometheus Research Institute became an important centre for the study of perception and synaesthesia. Galeev and students at the Kazan Aviation Institute developed a system for performing the light part in Alexander Scriabin’s “Prometheus: The Poem of Fire”. They also created the “Crystal” light-music instrument, reconstructed in 2016 by media artist Dmitry Morozov (::vtol::) and Sila Sveta. Two concerts at the end of the exhibition allow audiences to see and hear the reconstructed instrument in performance.

The reconstructed “Crystal” was also presented at the Polytechnic Museum in Moscow in 2015 (video).
