About the exhibition:
“Ideas for a Bright Future: A Brief History of Prometheus Student Engineering Bureau in Six Projects” introduces the bureau’s main fields of work. Founded at the Kazan Aviation Institute in 1962, Prometheus became a centre for practical experiments in light music, audiovisual synthesis and technological art. It also developed sustained theoretical research into experimental aesthetics and synaesthesia.
The first exhibition in the new space of the “Bulat Galeev–Prometheus” Foundation for the Support of Audiovisual and Technological Art, on the third floor of the Smena Centre for Contemporary Culture, brings together objects from different areas of audiovisual synthesis. Documents and other archival material show the student bureau from within.
The bureau’s experiments included light-music concerts, films made with colour and slides, dynamic architectural lighting, design, engineering psychology, kinetic objects and video installations. Members called this wide-ranging work “reconnaissance in force”. They believed that cybernetics, radio engineering and, later, computers would give artists new tools, expand the range of artistic forms and enable a richer synthesis of light and sound.
Curators: Anastasia Maksimova, Kirill Mayevsky
The exhibition was prepared jointly with the Smena Centre for Contemporary Culture and the ANKB design studio.
At 13:00 on 4 November, archive curator Anastasia Maksimova will introduce the history of Prometheus Student Engineering Bureau through photographs and documents. Visitors will also see restored analogue light-music instruments in operation.
Tours take place hourly from 12:00 to 19:00 each day.
